Composite Deck for Entertaining

This project was part of a whole house remodel with an addition to the master suite. The addition prompted two new elements to the project scope – a lawn and a deck. Due to issues with the septic drain field and the site’s critical slope, two retaining walls were built providing both stability and a flat, landscaped area for recreation, relaxation and entertaining. To access this new backyard asset, a replacement deck, running the full width of the view side of the house was built with steps leading to the new croquet court. In an effort to minimize deck maintenance requirements composite decking was selected for the deck surface (no sanding or re-staining required!) along with a stainless-steel railings. Both materials hold up well in this exposed marine environment. The joists were strategically placed near the giant fir three, allowing the homeowners to ‘trim’ the deck boards around the base of the tree as it grows without impacting the framing structure. A built-in bench provides extra seating during parties along with plenty of room for an outdoor fireplace, dining table, sun lounges and both ornamentals and edible potted plants.
