2. To ensure that your contractor has a clear vision of your needs, desires and objectives. This document can mitigate costly chance orders and make your project more attractive to a prospective contractor because all the decisions have been schedule. In an essence, the Design Report puts everyone on the same ‘page’ and expectations can be established upfront. There is one caveat, all designs and specifications are based on observable closed-wall conditions.

Sustainability can be defined in many ways. Selecting design features and materials that ensure good indoor air quality, water that is free of contaminants, natural light, appliances that facilitate healthy cooking, and in general materials that are high durability and low maintenance (minimizing replacements and landfill fodder) can all contribute to a sustainable project. MBD focuses on the health and wellness of the client which genuinely supports sustainability within the built environment and beyond.

This is easy! Many aging-in-place features are seamless, such as wider doorways, layered lighting, and consciously placed fixtures and appliances. Additionally, traditional aging-in-place features such as grab bars, are available in a multitude of attractive styles and finishes.

The duration of a residential remodel depends on the scope and complexity of the project. A remodel of a kitchen or bath can take several weeks months, while multi-room projects can take many months.

The cost of a residential remodel depends on a variety of factors, including the size of the project, the materials and fixtures used, and the complexity of the work involved. A simple renovation can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars, while a larger project can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Additional costs associated with remodels that are often overlooked can include utility bills for the power demands of construction, take-out meals, or kenneling pets.

Depending on the scope and nature of your project, you may need a permit from your local building department. Your designer or contractor should be able to advise you on the permit requirements for your project. Permits applications are typically submitted by the contractor or the project architect (if there is one).

Many people live in their homes during a remodel. Depending on the extent of the work being done, access to bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to temporarily relocate to another location. Your designer or contractor can advise you on the best approach for your specific situation.

To minimize disruptions during your residential remodel, it is important to communicate regularly with your contractor or designer and to plan ahead for any necessary accommodations or changes in your routine. You may also want to consider setting up a temporary kitchen or living space to use during the remodel away from the inevitable dust from remodel work.
